While he was in college, he spent a semester in Italy studying Italian Renaissance painting. Hatke attended Christendom College, in the Shenandoah Valley, earning his B.A. Other influences included Bill Watterson, Maurice Sendak, Leonardo da Vinci, Brian Froud, Trina Schart Hyman, Barry Windsor-Smith, and Todd McFarlane.
One of his early comics influences was Wendy and Richard Pini's Elfquest. His family were members of the Society for Creative Anachronism, and Hatke spent a lot of time outdoors as a child. Hatke was born in Lafayette, Indiana, and grew up with sisters. His work is notable for its focus on strong female characters. He is most well known for his series of middle grade graphic novels Zita the Spacegirl. Then, the Sneed arrived and exploded the button that was Zita’s only way home! Then he got into an epic fight with two robots. They had an exciting encounter with spiders, but they made it out safely.
Soon, they found a pathway that led to them. He came with her to find Joseph and the Screed. Soon, she found a robot who was being tortured by little men beating him with sticks. Zita went on a small adventure with the pet mouse of the man who had saved her. Then, she found the match for what she was looking for – she was looking for a match of the thing that kidnapped Joseph in his notebook. She woke up and went down to the laboratory of the man who had saved her. When she saved him, she got knocked out and he took her to his house. Then, she stopped some angry chickens from hurting a man. Then some weird looking creatures came out and told her that, in three days, an asteroid was going to explode them all. She had to run away or else she would have gotten kidnapped. But then his boss came and took him back to the workshop. The person who smashed it said he was sorry and carried her on his head. She was lost in the town, but then she found Joseph and that thing with a lot of tentacles. Zita pushed the red button again and she went into the portal. Joseph, Zita’s best friend, got pulled into the portal by something with black tentacles. Zita pushed the red button and suddenly, a portal opened. But soon she came to a big hole with a meteoroid in it. She stole his notebook from him and ran away with it. And when she did, she got into a very bad situation. Hi!
